There are different types of DVDs.
There is fullscreen 4:3 DVDs. These will result in pillarbox effect, black bars on the left and right hand side. This can be compensated for using stretch or zoom options on the TV.
There is widescreen 1.78 DVDs. These will fill up a 16:9 set (so an HDTV set). Nothing needs to be done to these.
There is widescreen 2.35 DVDs. This is an artistic choice made by some directors. The result of this aspect ratio is that even on a 16:9 screen you still have a letterbox effect (black bars on the top and bottom). You don’t actually want to mess with this image. You need to just deal with it being that way. If you use any of the TVs format options you will significantly crop off parts of the image (like cut characters right out of shots).
Why do they shoot that? Its an artistic option. There’s nothing more to it. Some director made that decision and that was that. Oh and well some producer allowed him/her to do it. But there’s really nothing more to it. Some people get annoyed by this, but its just part of the landscape of film.
Hi,
Very simple. What type of DVD player so you have? Is it HDMI upconverting or just Progressive with Component out? If it is HDMI, on the DVD’s menu, go and change the aspect ratio to 16:9 and now you should have the whole screen fill on the tv. If it is just Progressive scan with Component out, on your tv, you have the option of changing the aspect ratio for your DVD player input. Go to tv’s menu and find it. Every tv and dvd player has got diffrent menues so I can’t tell you specifically where to find the aspect ratio. If you have the manuels take a look in their else try looking for it under the menue, you’ll find it eventually. Remember you can also use the zoom feature on your DVD’s remote. Some tv’s has got the zoom feature as well. Use the zoom feature if you need to fill top and bottom, use the aspect ratio change if you need to fill left and right. Hope this clears everything up.
Good luck!
